Robin Hobb does similar, but those books are so miserable I can't bring myself to read them further
The way of shadows book series is really interesting here. It is objectively power fantasy trash, buuut the characters make mistakes constantly, male and female, sometimes without knowing, sometimes just because they are really angry. For some reason it makes the book series much more engaging to me for this.

Yeah one of the reasons that house prices have been allowed to grow so insanely in the UK is the lack of an actual property tax. If I buy a £4 million house, I pay £4k a year in council tax.
Correct! All our local governments are going bankrupt. We do have council tax, but it's based on the theoretical value of your house in 1990, and caps at a very low number compared to the States.

There is the issue that local govt here have a *lot* of responsibilities, insufficient funding, and very very few ways to raise money. Property tax basically isn't a thing here. Councils start getting *creative* with their income.

no ham just means village in old english. Hamlet is like froglet, just with the diminutive suffix. Tiny village.
