I live somewhere where large scale hydro isn't just feasible, it's already implemented! There are other sources of energy of course, but implementing more wind and solar would just mean that we can keep our dams and reservoirs more full.
Coincidentally, nearby to where I live also has one of the highest concentrations of uranium ore in the world, which is perfect for nuclear power. If only we could convince everyone that nuclear is safe...
Where I live, we don't use CSP but we do use hydroelectric dams, and more applicable to the current situation, elevated reservoirs!
When power is needed, drop the water down through a turbine, when we have excess energy from solar, we pump it back up to the top again.
Not 100% efficient of course, but it's a spectacular use of our natural resources.
We don't need batteries, we need energy storage. Batteries do store energy, but there's several reasons why we should not use batteries to store enough energy for most of the grid to run off of each night.
Spain and Portugal have concentrating solar power (CSP) plants that use parabolic mirrors to heat up molten salt, which is stored in an insulated tank and released when power is needed. It's much more reliable and less resource intensive than batteries are.
