The mass of the ball is irrelevant also, this experiment would work with a 5kg or a 500kg ball, just one would need more force for 50mph

You are saying the momentum of the truck is equal to the momentum of the cannonball? I'd imagine the truck probably weighs more and same v?

Obviously anything with velocity and mass has momentum, in this case it is simpler to understand just using velocities.

Obviously the balls momentum changes as a result of its change in velocity, but you can just add the velocity vectors (50 + -50) for 0 mph

If you fire a ball of mass 5kg or of mass 500kg out of the back of the truck at 50mph what would change? Does the mass really matter?

All velocities are proportional to momentum as p=mv, you don't need to use momentum to make sense of the gif though, just add velocities

just about velocities - regardless of the mass any ball that has 50mph forward velocity + 50mph backward will drop

It would require more force to accelerate a ball of greater mass to the same velocity but the original gif speaks nothing about forces (1/2)

as opposed to forward firing where the missile already is moving at 1200 mph in the direction it is being fired
