most of the time a classic interior brick wall is just dead weight...
It's also very common in western europe... It's "good enough" + much faster, cheaper, easier for DIY, better for electricians, etc....
True, however even kitchen knives can cut through drywall, and you don't have to make the hole round you can make it any shape you want...
Better screw a piece of wood behind the hole and screw new round piece of gyprock to it, as an electrician I do it almost every other day...
A plus/minus screwdriver is a mix between both used by electricians (aka SL/PZ...)
He was probably entry level assistant in 1978, he says "the same job" pays $17, not the job he's doing today....
