So you basically null your license agreement if you obtain a copy of an IP but don't have proof it's a back up etc. It's all grey area stuff
Step further iirc laws say legally you can have a copy of something like ROMs so long as you have proof of purchase and destroy the original
(1) ROMs are not illega, possession of ROM without owning them or a physical copy consitutes copy infringement which can be taken to trial
