This, imgur amplifies and exaggerates everything, luckily I go outside and meet alot of new people all the time but if I went solely on what imgur says I'd think the US was a racist dangerous place where stepping outside is not worth the risk

In this case you are the stupid one, turning lights on and off use a miniscule fraction of their on state usage, worst offender florescent, about 1 second of normal use so even they benefit from turning them off if leaving for an extended period. In my area a 60w lightbulb on for 24 hours would cost 50 cents not 1 cent, multiply that by multiple bulbs over a month over a year it adds up. And all of this is ignoring the other reasons you should be turning your lights off when not in use.
