Don’t be fooled by the loud idiots online. This is not a position that “the US” generally holds; it’s just a handful of MAGA trolls, most of whom are probably not even US-based accounts. (A huge chunk of the MAGAsphere is Russian and Chinese bots cosplaying as American.)
That is not how anyone in the English-speaking world uses it. “America” is the metonym for the US of A. We do this with dozens of other nations, like Britain instead of the United Kingdom of Great Britain or Monaco in area of the Principality of Monaco, and nobody complains. Absolutely nobody in the English-speaking world uses the word “America” on its own to refer to the continent(s); that is pretty much exclusively a Latin American thing that has become a common online grievance.
The same applies to most things that people might says are “not a word.” The word exists, but it doesn’t mean what people are using it to mean, and it’s practically nonexistent if you filter out those mistaken uses.
The original M-W tweet is slightly misleading, though, because while it’s nearly self-evident that “supposably” is a word with that definition (if something can be supposed, it’s supposable, and then you just make it an adverb), that is almost never what people mean when they say or write “supposably.” 999 times out of 1000, the person meant “supposedly.” So this tweet feels technically true but practically irrelevant.
Or like spend 1 second verifying that’s the official M-W account. Asking an “AI” is absolutely not “the smartest move” in this case.
It’s definitely scripted if not AI. The (in)ability of people to recognize scripted comedy is honestly depressing.
I own a board game called Warfighter, probably at least 10 years old, so it was definitely a term before. But I never heard it used IRL before Hegseth. It gives off cosplay tpugh guy vibes to me.
Go on any social media platform and you will find the overwhelming majority of people reporting that everyone else in their lives is a toxic, abusive narcissist while they themselves are a tragic martyr. It simply can’t be true that everyone’s family, partners, and coworkers are all toxic abusive narcissists, because that means EVERYONE is. But I see it in a more positive light: everyone is genuinely trying their best, but we’re flawed creatures and inevitably hurt each other occasionally.
Their best evidence is 1) he gave guidance about face masks early on that he later contradicted when the situation developed (as scientists should do), and 2) conspiracy theories about COVID being an engineered virus. That’s it.
About 10 miles where I live, where gas is $6 a gallon. Two specific grocery stores that happen to have the sale prices to make this meal work can easily reach 10 miles
The science is split on if they know what they are doing, but they definitely aren’t just “coached” to push specific buttons. It’s pretty much universally agreed that it works well for simple concepts like hungry or outside. Dogs are smart.
That was one cut, sir.
So you think it was better to sit out the election and hand it to Trump than vote for Harris? You still think that after two years of his second term? Cute.
Pretty sure Trump was president during the Afghanistan war too.
How did both of you misspell “aid” in the same way? An aide is an assistant; aid is assistance.
30-somethings catching strays
Depends on the demographic. In the US it’s several inches below average, but globally it’s damn near the average for men (5’7”) and above the average for combined sexes. It would be spot on the male average in Afghanistan. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height_by_country
I think it has a lot more to do with massively declining sales of physical media and higher profit captured from digital sales. What you are describing might happen, but talking about it like it’s a conspiracy and the end goal of all these shifts is just wacky. Companies don’t want to deliver a worse product; they want to increase their profits.
Well, 5 of them couldn’t.
That one is weird to me because, like, is anime not popular in Japan? Is it perhaps the fact a grown person is wearing a shirt depicting a show marketed at children that’s the issue? Or, worse, a show for “adults only”?
I did not get it either because the person wrote “tilt” but meant “rotate.”
Do grocery prices next. Or, heck, the price of a ps5, which has increased by $150 or 30% since Trump took office.
Alcoholism is a hell of a disease. The sad truth is that probably was the best he could do. Does not mean he needs to be forgiven or gets a pass for his behavior, because he does not. But neither is he a fairy tale villain gleefully wrecking other people’s lives. Humans are complicated, and some of them are struggling so hard against the currents of life they drag others down with them.
Yep, there is no ambiguity. Definitely orchids.
Unfortunately I don’t think Democrats are going to risk running a female candidate again until MAGA is a distant memory. Both times so far have given us Trump.
The ironic thing is that the new one sounds like she is doing a bad impression of Jen Psaki, except she’s not clever or honest enough to actually clap back with facts so she just spews the most inane, blatant BS constantly.
That’s due to actual research into what people are able to read comfortably. Not to mention all the mishears and other errors that always show up in the text. Just a middle finger to the deaf and hard of hearing community.
Off topic but I cannot stand this style of subtitle. You think it is helping anyone to have the last word of the sentence appear on-screen for 1 millisecond? There’s a reason subtitles in TV and movies have been the way they are for decades, and tbat
Look, I do not condone this AT ALL (who would?), but isn’t this headline missing an “allegedly”? I’d be was only arrested/charged, he has not been found guilty by a jury of his peers, and for a crime of this magnitude, I’d rather a person’s name remain out of the papers until judged guilty, even horrible racists. How is nobody else taking issue with this?
