I highly recommend Olive wood. Pennstateind.com sells it at a decent price. It turns so smooth, and looks beautiful.
I know I'm late, but congrats!!! That is really exciting, and it looks great. I still have my first (successful) pen. Keep it up!
It looks like there are holes drilled for handles. My guess is this was just to demonstrate.
What finish do you use? CA glue? And did you add an inlay for the stripes?

Get on YouTube and check out stuff on turning green wood and microwave drying. Or turn it to completion green and enjoy the figure it takes
Do a mid size bowl, but start with green wood. It's easier to turn and learn from. Plus you can just get the wood for free
