Sure, a bunch of the founders come off as hypocrites but you might like John Adams and his son's speeches on abolition really are ahead of their time.

They're part of the reason that abolition happens fairly early in Massachusetts

Thanks for sharing these. The New Guinea campaigns tend to get overlooked. I don't think I've ever read about Maffin Bay before.

14 dead people? Hell no, I'm not falling for that.

14 dead people and a goth girl who may or may not be responsible? Hell yes, I'm falling for that.

The Cave Scale works like metric. When you get to 10 Caves, it equates to 1 Tom Waits, and 10 Waits is 1 George Carlin.

Oh, so they're gonna lie their asses off long enough to dupe their gullible base yet again, then reverse course and keep giving datacenters blank checks?

Funding and training the mujahideen does look like a slightly iffy call in hindsight, but surely there were never any other negative consequences to proxy wars during the Cold War that we could've learned from

Manufacturing consent for two land wars in the Middle East and countering every rational argument that against them with "No it won't, shut up nerds!" and getting away with it does seem to be the blueprint the GOP has followed ever since.

Yeah but you get carried away by goth Christina Ricci so it's like win-win

In terms of Mao or Stalin, there's a legitimate threat in the early cold war but Ho Chi Minh and Giap were probably useful allies to be had with a bit wiser foreign policy by Truman or Eisenhower.

Sure. The Allies trained the Viet Minh during WW2 to fight the Japanese, so there's probably a valuable lesson to be learned about proxy wars and ugly unforeseen consequences. But I'm sure that was never a problem again during the Cold War.

And if you really wanted to stop the communist takeover, odds are hell of a lot better if you do it with food aide in 1945 when 150k+ Vietnamese are starving to death every month than advisors and direct intervention in the 50s and 60s.

That'll do. Gemini or Seasons of the Abyss too

Ken Burns always does some flag waving, but it's a decent entry point if people haven't got time for a 800 pager like Karnow wrote. Kind of like Ambrose and Band of Brothers.

Better yet, check out Vietnam by Stanley Karnow, Hanoi's War by Lien Hang Nguyen, or Ken Burns' Vietnam miniseries.

Can I get my outro music to be Slayer though? If I've gotta go downbeat, Tom Waits or Nick Cave, but Moby was not my jam in life
