Shelter is a good idea. Not only have I adopted two dogs and three cats from them, but I also met my wife there.
I feel this. I finally volunteered at the local animal shelter. Very hard to be sad while walking happy doggos. Even meet some good people.
Did this 5 years ago. Loving and living my BEST life now. It sucks, but it can be worth it.

From soul wrenching experience, I learned you can't help someone who won't help themselves. If she won't go, go to a counselor yourself.
But then you're missing out on the absolute joy that loving an animal will bring. Knowing that you brought them love & comfort, priceless.
