You just look for the quartz veins and dig under/around them. Sometimes you'll see evidence just sitting on the ground already!

The vein ended at the furthest point on the right, so that'll get filled in on the next visit until we deplete the pocket, then fill it all.
Usually, yes. In this case, we used the dirt to make the ground softer around it so we can pitch a tent for an overnight visit sometime. 1/2
The vein was at the back of that hole, so we left that right "column" there to prevent it from collapsing. 2/2
Nah, but if we'd gone wider/deeper, maybe. The host rock was decomposed granite so it was really soft and wouldn't hold up well enough. 1/2
Congrats! I don't really follow dog show stuff, but my girlfriend shows Samoyeds and I know this is a big deal!
