Result of defeat, or even not a win, is coup probably. Strongmen who are exposed as weak never last long. Nuclear use is extremely unlikely.
Combined with weak Western support of Ukraine 2014 - Feb 23 2022. Many current EU/NATO actions where not even on the table back in Jan.
Genuinely seems to be arrogance and nostalgia for the USSR. Putin truly believed that Ukraine is not a real nation and would no fight. /

Verified that a MiG is (or at least was) still flying. Performance is almost certainly overstated, hence why its described as claims.
Worst case? All of Ukraine falls, refugee crisis splinters EU, disunity paralyses NATO, democratic inaction prompts China to take Taiwan.
No, the 2003 war did have genuine controversy in the diplomatic sphere for example Saddam expelling UN inspectors and previous belligerence.
It was in his history rant where he declared that the USSR should not have let republics leave. His FM has also claimed the 1917 borders.

I think it was intended from the start to be an invasion. Compare the details of build up the the 2021 April bluff. Ammo, medicine, ect.

The West must hold its leaders responsible for any (in)actions. Push for arms, money, accept refugees, spread facts, reject disinformation.
A rational actor would have bluffed. Unfortunately Putin is not a rational actor. I was convinced of invasion weeks ago, hoped I was wrong.
Not formally but a lack of air travel and rising insurance rates was hurting. Hard to convince companies to invest when Russia is invading.
Russia invaded and carved out two "independent" republics which are de facto part of Russia.

Not exporting is one thing. Germany has no obligation to help a non-NATO nation. But Ger actively took action to prevent others from helping
I am aware of German hollow excuse. They sell weapons to Egypt and Turkey despite their conflicts. Again they blocked someone else's export.
Direct arms sales stopped in 2014 due to US pressure, sales of dual-use goods continue. See my Feb 18 Ukraine Update for details.
Not blocking Estonia from sending ex-GDR howitzers to Ukraine as aid would be a nice start. Literally doing nothing would be an improvement.
