It's not, it shoots slugs with plasma and has a setter like a crossbow. Chewie just customized his so it auto-sets and fires faster.
I felt they were kind of heavy handed compared to the original trilogy in making sure it all had precedent. In Ep. IV we just accept shit.
Also the like 80 pieces of dialogue and the half hour worth of setup scenes for Ren's mental state and Finn and Rey's abilities.
They kind of did. That's their whole thing. There's only two and they don't exactly broadcast shit.
It was clear to anyone paying attention to the dialogue and clues in the narrative, they just weren't spelled out in big bold letters.

That's never mentioned in the movies, though, unlike Finn being trained as a stormtrooper since childhood.

Which established lore? EU isn't canon anymore and people seem to wear nostalgia glasses about the plot holes in the originals.
The lighsaber chooses the Jedi, Mr. Potter.
Given the state of Ren's saber, I doubt they'd gotten that far in class. That thing was not built by someone who had much guidance.
IIRC, he made it himself as a custom addition, so it's unlikely it ever got to someone who would mass-produce it.
It only took Luke about 30 seconds to master deflecting blasters without being able to see, so timeline kind of checks out.
