These guys are absolutely GREAT (adding Hal David, Burt's writing partner, of course), but the author of "The House of the Rising Sun" is unknown, as it is a traditional folk song that has been passed down through generations. The earliest known recording was made in 1933 by Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, but the song likely has roots in earlier English folk traditions.
