When I read Unseen academicals it really hit me hard that this was nearly the end, it was hard, especially as you could see changes in his work, I still haven't read the shepards crown, maybe for the same reason as you. I shall flex my ancient history degree and say this is not meant to be historical in that sense. The movie is Dillios (stand in for Aristodemos), the survivor, rally the Greeks with an epic tail of monsters and barbarians before the battle of Plateae. He isn't telling it how it was, he is a hype man, and the film reflects his hype story.If we follow history from there, he dies at that battle.
I think it's because it is hardly the only horrible writing decision in that film, but acts as sort of a dumb plot point demonstration for the others. A lightning rod of disdain.
