I wouldn't bother sending after your first coat of poly. Just use some fine steel wool. All you are trying to do is knock fibers down

I meant a plug not a dowel. A plug cutter cuts a "dowel" so that the end grain is actually b edge/face grain. It will match much better.

Actually glue and saw dust didn't stain/finish the same. I would have used a plug cutter and flush cut saw. No filter needed, grain matches
