Well, yes, I wasn't talking about the cell phone adapter and pressboard furniture industry, but selling oil to the US and buying gas and diesel back at a massive markup is foolish when we could have been investing in our own resource industry. (I'm staunchy anti fossil fuel, but the fact remains that it was the energy of the last {n} centuries and we squandered ours)
Canada sits on some of the world's largest reserves of oil, nickel, iron, lithium, diamonds, gold, uranium, rare earths, etc. To say nothing of the renewable natural resources like wood, water, etc. We are paupers on the global market instead of princes because we give raw materials away for a nickel and buy finished products for a dollar. Canada should have been increasing industry and manufacturing at an exponential rate for the last century.
Unless you live in Nova Scotia, where the conservatives would have us driving coal burning cars if they could.
The liquor stores in Canada are government owned. There's no private owner mom and pop missing out. Though you can buy wine and beer elsewhere in some provinces, hard liquor is only available through the provincial liquor commissions.

Much like how it's not the fault of a cargo ship that our world will be unlivable in a few generations.
