flip it around and use the jaws on the bowl itself without the ring. I would also suggest paper towels rather than rags as paper tears 3/?
the bowl on the portion that you will be removing (the bowl itself) and turn the outside without tailstock interferance. Then you can 2/?
I've got some tips then. Get a face plate ring, It will save you messing around with centres. That way you can screw the ring to 1/?

I remember reading somewhere about being able to do it with just muscle movements in the region. If I could give you source I would.
