Lower smoking rates definitely helped reduce deaths since smoking is a major cause, but it’s not the only reason for the decline.
Not to say that the drop in smoking wasn't effective, but medical advances have also brought significant changes. We're far better at dealing with cancer today than we were in the 70s.
