I agree with what @perolith said for the most part. There is a "group finder" type thing as well but communication is vital for it to be fun
Depends on the person for some games. For example, I enjoy playing Diablo 3 by myself because it's braindead and I don't have to wait.
Really depends on if you have a solid group of people to play with. Playing by yourself isn't nearly as fun as playing with a group.
