There is a benefit of doing it in handwriting. It forces you to think and plan ahead your structure. You don't have the luxury to move a sentence up or a paragraph down with a couple of keystrokes. Your structure and thought process must be good from the start so you can build it on the fly with time constraints.

I read the arstechnica article that does a far better job at explaining the whole situation than just an image. A company (Open Source Storage) used Iron Mountain services to host a variety of physical servers in their facilities that, among other things and for other clients, did backups for PBS nine. OSS folded/died/became unresponsive. Iron Mountain cannot just hand access to the servers or the data to PBS nine because it is not legally theirs and there might be OSS other clients involved.
