I know big/wide eyes are a beauty standard in a lot of asian countries. There’s a fairly common(?) beauty routine where women push their upper eyelids up into the eye socket with a special tool and literally glue them open. It’s not permanent or (AFAIK) dangerous, and doesn’t affect their ability to blink except maybe making them need to do it more often.

That’s what these “peaceful protests” miss. No one cares if you wave some signs for a few hours, you’re ALLOWED to do that. Civil disobedience is about being as disruptive and obstructive as possible. Nonviolent, yes, but never peaceful. For every person dragged off, 5 more fill their place. Overwork the police, flood the jails, force the system to a halt, and make it clear that until they give us what we want, we aren’t going anywhere. THAT’S how Civil Rights and ADA got passed.
