You know what's funny, I enforced boundaries, made sure to say I'm willing to talk but not fight, and after I moved to seek employment and get married, have a kid etc, his ire only grew. My dad refers to me (at least he did, last I heard about three years ago) as a "lost cause"... Somehow I know he'd be happier with me as a recovering something, completely dependent on both of them into my 40s. Some parents don't want kids, they want pets. Anyway, happy Father's Day to those who do better.

Fathers Day sucks for a lot of people (myself included) but anyone can show up for anyone else and if it's in the right mindset and the right way, it's dadding all the same and it's about actions, not lineage. Just noticed you said it's a 4 foot cutting of a 12 foot plant, it doesn't have a root system and can't pull water to the leaves. Cut the stem down and immerse the new cut in water with some rooting solution, and put a tent or dome over the leaves to limit transpiration. Cut the leaves down to 2-3 healthy smallish leaves. Check the roots and soil, if it's too wet an old tree might not handle the new environment and the roots can start rotting. Older plants can be stunned or enter dormancy if they are shocked too hard, and adding more x y z normal growth factor will only hurt it harder.
