Nerds are way more mainstream than people realize. I go to a lot of conventions, and a large percentage of attendees are whole families, with both parents and children geeking out.

Modeling and performance fashion are rarely about comfort or practicality. I doubt anyone is wearing that to a social event.
Guys are just drawn to large or complex physical tasks.
