There are individuals like that in any profession, but the actual professional culture being that way is obviously not universal. Surgical residency is deliberately brutal in a way that even most other residencies in medicine aren't. 24-hour-shifts aren't a universal thing in medicine, let alone something you see teachers complaining about.

But yeah, it's unsafe in its own way. In medicine there's a culture of "I had to do it, so you have to also" in certain specialties that makes reform hard. Surgeons especially are known for poor work-life balance.
