I think the CD-ROM/RW was a failure, similar to energy saving bulbs with quicksilver. Soooomuch waste and hard to handle storage.
We’ve should’ve kept 3.5 disks, increase size and leap to SD-Cards. And kept using SD-Cards. The Mini-SD-Card is too small. And regular one is easier to grasp, insert and write on label.
The label thing is - aside from the attachment to the device outside - one of the failures of USB-Thumbdrives. SD-Push-Push Slots are much more comfortable and safer.
