It's nothing to do with survive v thrive - they've evolved to live there. Go see them in the wild - they avoid large bodies of water.

I'm from England, but worked in aquatics shops for 3 years + degree in marine biology. You don't need to go crazy wild to find Betas (1/2)
They're really not that bad - I've seen Betas in far less water in the wild. Densest numbers are in small, shallow areas, never deep water!
I love how the people in the crowd barely seem to flinch at a bike hurtling towards them!
