Once you're able to pinpoint a failure in a simple electronics, a logical step to buy a soldering iron (and flux, and solder, and save some boards for spares) then you will absolutely need a hot air station, a microscope, IR camera etc. Same with furniture repair: glue, clamps, sanders etc.
That's true but there's only so much you can do with just basic set of tools. To do things right you often need specialized machinery and/or chemicals. If you add to that the amount of raw materials&cutoffs that "might be useful", the space in normal apartment will shrink with every new skill you get.
What about insides? I usually get more wear and tear inside of my shoes and judging by the condition these boots had a decent mileage to their name.
