My daughter was an advanced reader when she started Kinder. My wife and I love to read. Even if we didn't, what parent wouldn't want to give their kid every advantage they could? Why set up your child for failure when you could be arming them with the best weapons you could? In your old age, will you still be supporting your illiterate offspring, or will they be supporting you? *sigh* Can you tell this is a sore spot? :D
A little over a decade ago, my first cohort of 6th graders had an average reading level of 3rd grade - meaning half of them were lower than that. No way those kids could catch up and pass the standardized tests at the end of the year demonstrating a sixth grade reading ability (well.. two did. I worked hard on them). My principal told me to "cut loose" all but the top 25% or so. And so we pass them all along to 7th grade, and perpetuate the problem.
As a teacher myself, IMHO this all starts in the home. When you child starts going to school the parent(s) should have been preparing their child for reading ("pre-literate"). For a variety of reasons it just doesn't seem to be happening much anymore; maybe they work and are too tired, maybe they're not literate themselves, maybe they're just too lazy and it's easier to hand the kid a tablet and ignore them while they scroll through TikTok.
There's a good number that can't spell their own names.

More than that, you're demonstrating to the rest of the Navy they could be treated the exact same way.
Funny thing, about thirty years ago I sliced up my left hand kinda badly, and like a fool didn't go to the hospital. Fingers don't bend right, etc, now. So when I sign, I totally have an accent. But not as much as a friend who was run over by a lawnmover at age 4, and only has two half-fingers and a nub for a thumb on one hand...
