I think it's the nature of the pit. The pit sent out a double, it can do whatever it wants. Lure you in, produce your worst fears.

I was trying to use that rule to figure out if the indented squares are light or dark, and got confused for a bit when it didn't work....

The second is that the bible is a cure for whatever problems those of the Christian faith have.
The first way I see to interpret it is that Christianity is an affliction and can be cured/gotten rid of by reading the bible.
He was a great showrunner. The show lacks character depth somehow these days, and often the pace is gone to hell. RTD can write good drama.
