It's called 'brake fade', and when it happens there is no amount of braking force you can apply that will get the brakes to work again.
What happens is the brake linings get hot, start producing gas, and that gas acts like a lubricant that drastically cuts friction.
Brakes on these trucks are really easy to burn up. The amount of energy they have to deal with is mind boggling.
It does make me wonder if that tupperware torpedo had a jake brake on it. 7% is steep but manageable for a standard 53 dry van on jake brake
Also this is precisely why those ramps exist and they are a GODSEND.

can get 10 year car loans these days if you really like paying interest....also my ride is 54 years old with no signs of impending doom to be found. Paid off too, because it's inherited and grampa paid it off 50+ years ago haha.
So roughly half the mileage I put on my 54 year old truck annually. I did 22,000 miles in my grandfather's 71 Chevy C10 in the year I've had it dailyable so far.
And yet my 54 year old truck is just laughing at having to drive 80 miles a day 5 days a week all year round all weather.....
