Just to be sure it's clear, this is talking about the human (primate?) unconscious bias against those not in our "tribe*, and outward appearance is one of the ways we can determine "us vs them". This is not a defense of racism, just an acknowledgement of what allows it to take shape. We are clearly capable of making those who look or speak differently "one of us", but until we acknowledge that bias micro and macro aggressions will always shadow what we do.

We used to have 4 months of emergency savings. Then I was laid off and couldn't find work for 11 months. We managed to keep the house, but it was a damn close thing. Currently building back, but only have about 1.5 months and I'm keenly aware of how little that is every single day.

For the vast majority of these kids, they know who they are from a very early age. Additionally, trans teenagers who are forced to go through puberty as their birth-assigned gender have a 70% higher risk of suicide attempts, so this is literally life-saving treatment. Restricting these drugs is actively malicious.
It sounds like you're trying to be supporting but are uninformed, so please know I mean this to be helpful. Puberty blockers have been part of the standard of care for trans adolescents for almost 3 decades now (and used off-label even longer), in part because they're reversible. All they do is give kids more time to figure out who they are and make it easier if they do eventually decide to transition as an adult. Belated, but I apologize for generalizing. I realize that my comment could be read as "Trans men don't have issues", and that couldn't be further from my intention. What I should have said was that trans men, on average, draw less public scrutiny compared to trans women. But a guy walking into the ER with two broken arms doesn't mean you no longer need help for your one broken leg, and it sure as hell doesn't make it stop hurting. I'm glad you're still here. ✌️

To be fair, I've never really considered the "pressure to pass to remove the problem" aspect but I think you're spot on! My mom was a private school teacher when I was growing up, and even without government funding there was immense pressure to avoid holding students back. I can't imagine that pressure going any way but up once you add in a threat of having to do more with less.
The business taking precedence over the people is absolutely a severe issue, and exactly why I made the distinction. We have laws being written specifically for the benefit of businesses, and it's happening because the courts decided money = free speech, which in turn gave large corporations and industries an absolutely unprecedented amount of influence. We could replace every one of the people and the businesses would remain. The corp. influence is what we have to fix to make any real change

Sorry but what you described isn't what that policy was. NCLB tied how much federal funding a district received to their standardized testing scores. It had nothing to do with repeating grades.To be clear: the policy is at best idiotic, and at worst actively malicious. It all but ensures underperforming schools enter a death spiral, and the fact that teachers are now forced to "teach to the test" was a surprise to absolutely fucking no one with a working brain and 10 seconds to consider it.
