Few months after my wreck I rolled up on another one, semi VS car. Car had kid seats, they were the only thing the driver could remember of the actual wreck. We made sure to check them both for him and just cause hello, car seats. Thankfully, they were empty, so at least that's one less thing on his conscience, but trust me, it doesn't really help much.

They are trained to break as hard as is safe for the people on board. This reduces, as much as practical, damage to the vehicle, what it hits, the street/rails, and also the passengers if hitting the ossicle would cause a sudden further deceleration.
(or for some modern trams: are trained to slam the breaks on as hard as possible, and let automated vehicle management systems limit the actual breaking to a safe rate)
It would slow down a lot more, or possibly derail, if the car it hit is pushed into a more immovable bollard, or something similar happens. This is part of why drivers will break as hard as it is safe to do in these circumstances - greater safety for vehicle, driver, and passengers. It also reduces the amount of energy ploughed into the car, reducing the chance of life changing/ending injury to its passengers, and makes it less likely to be shoved into other road users or nearby people.

Train drivers have a huge amount of trauma related to stuff like this, even when it's out of their control when people get hurt and killed in these accidents it can really mess you up.
Where I live it was the number one suicide method while I was growing up. Even remember a kid got drunk, fell over crossing the tracks, went to sleep, legs got cut off and all I thought about was how it must feel to be the train guy. So many probably want to stop but can't in time.
When I lived in SoFlo (Delray Beach) the train was a preferred suicide method. Happened often, freakishly. I always felt bad for the train personnel. It wasn’t their fault yet they had to carry it.

Friend of mine used to be a mail carrier. Guy on his route was an engineer for the LIRR which enters Manhattan through the east river tunnel. During a casual conversation one day he remarked to him that people have no idea how many homeless people get hit by trains in that tunnel.
Yeah, I actually witnessed this on a highway one Sunday evening. My then-husband called 911 while I ran back to the kid who was hit. Then-husband went to the semi driver and later told me he (driver) was a wreck. I can't imagine living with that.
I've got one and now meds and a therapist for my troubles. Still trucking, finally reached the point where I don't flinch when a car comes up from the side.
I knew a 20 yr old in our area who purposely walked onto an interstate & was hit/killed by a semi. Poor semi driver inadvertently helped the young man end his life.
The number of people cutting in front of me so closely I can't even see their rear tires is terrifying. Then you get that one who goes 15 over to pass and then immediately brakes to get to "their exit". Everyone: please be careful! I don't want to kill you. I can't stop on a dime. Leave 5+ car lengths in between so that semis can brake to a stop.
Little car here. They do it to everyone. These people drive like they'll live forever. I've even had a semi do it to me once. They laid the horn on me for going the speed limit in the right lane. So many people drive like they've never had the pleasure of an airbag and it shows.
The only time I change lanes without leaving 5 car lengths(leaving about 3-4) is when I know I have a traffic weaver behind me who will cut off the semi driver close, but if I change lanes then they will floor it and get in front of me. I'm still going fast enough that there will be at least 5 car lengths in a few seconds anyway. Of course sometimes the weaver merges when there is 1.5 car length between me and the semi.

It's multiplayer with voice chat, and you can either drive a train or be the dispatcher of one of the stations, where you have to switch tracks (some use computers, some are electromechanical). The image you directly replied to is how the loco looks in real life. Game is still Early access, so watch a few videos of it first before buying. Has about 5 locos, but the crummy sowjet one is ma favorite.
