Why are there always a dozen people saying it's a repost? Who gives a shit? Not everyone spends 24 hours a day on Imgur. So it's new to us.
Put yourself in my situation, would you like to see reposts?
I do see reposts every time I log on. And I'm new. I just scroll to the next post. Where would we be if things didn't repeat?
With a diffrent mindset you might change a world--repeat? So you want wars to happen again?
Not if we learn from past mistakes. Not everything needs to be exactly the same. Unless you're obsessive compulsive.

A lot of businesses will use wraps to cheaply put their business name on their vehicles along with a unique visual scheme to make their (1)
fleet stand out while out on the road. (2/2)
MrForgetfulable
Wrapped my e30 a few months back, it's easier than you think, but time consuming for sure. Several years if done right, wash by hand.
plymouthvaliant
Main benefit is that you change the color while preserving the original paint.
Side benefit is that it requires less specialized equipment/facilities than paint to install. Supposed to last a few years.
Never had any problems with touchless car washes with my wrap.
Thanks for the info man.

TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
Its the poor mans paint job, only thing worse is plasti dipping.
shitonyourmom
If you ever plan to change color again this is much better than paint and cheaper. Plus you keep your original paint.
The entire point of painting is to get rid of the original paint.
DanImguru
No this is actually a really good thing, it's wayy cheaper then just re painting the whole car and it protects the original paint.
Just because its cheaper doesn't make it better. It looks shitty, creases and peels & the point of painting is to get rid of the original.
Roctre
Only creases and peels if its a shit installer and it doesn't look shitty in the least bit. Plus it keeps the car paint looking brand new.
Once again. They entire point of doing this is to change the paint. Also any kind of scratch will start the peeling process, where as on

This job is really impressive. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to make a vinyl wrap job that lasts for more than 24 hours.
TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsTheBabyAteMyDingo
As someone who actually does this, not really hard at all.
For me it was very difficult to do it without stretching the material past the point of resuming it's original form once no longer heated.
It does take a few times to learn the feel of the vinyl, but once you get it the job gets easy.

Yeah wraps are very low quality and look bad. They only thing worse is plasti dip.
AGrammeIsBetterThanADamn
I can think of lots worse. Rattlecan. Full-coverage duct tape or bumper stickers. The "art car". Airbrushed graphics. Smear shit all over it
I would 100% have shit smeared on my car then ever even think about plasti dip or wrapping it. Also duct tape is above wraps on the chart.
thoushaltnotpass
I don't know why you would do that. The car was much nicer before they wrapped it in that thing
Well, that's just like, your opinion, man.
Having done both, yeah. Paint looks better, lasts longer, and isn't that much different in price.
Why? Just to spend more money?
GavinScreaming
Yea the original paint looked better. It that it looked perfect but still better than the wrap
trina1978
How do they get the smoother thing to stay on the car for the photo? Even doing a stop motion of the smoothing effect must take forever.
An earlier comment said they figured the guys smoothing it were wearing green clothes so they could be edited out of the film easier.

Would wrapping a car be cheaper than painting?
SaltyAsshole
If you wanted to learn from nothing how to paint a car yourself, it would cost about 2-5k in materials.
JonRedcorn862
lol no it wouldn't. You could do a decent respray by yourself for 500 bucks including the compressor and air gun.
You forgot to factor in the expenses incurred from the learning curve of people.
You stated materials doe..
No, I said how much it would cost to learn, the cost to learn tends to be 2.5 times the cost of just doing for a raw novice.
MacThunderfart
Yes. The materials for a respray are very expensive and you have to invest 10h atleast. If we are really fast and the car is small 8h.
mrhobbybob
Yeah its cheaper
JeffwiththeNukes
A high end paint job is about 8k for a whole car.
Conflict
(2) something like that the person has to go to someone else. Wraps are cheaper but paint is easier to fix.
McVirusS
Yes. The car in the image is probably worth less than the cost of wrapping it by the way. Proper wrapping is between 1500 and 2000 €/$.
ensignricky71
Cheaper, but still not cheap. A full wrap on something like an SUV can still run 1500-2000 dollars from a good shop
grovberg
I'm fairly certain the only reason this is plain blue is for the stop motion demo. You generally wrap a car to apply graphics of some sort.
maxlt1
That's how wrapping started. These days, people get solid color wraps as well
Maybe. I've wrapped a car for $800 and painted one for $400. Depends on materials used and labor involved.
W92Baj
If you painted a car for $400, you had your own equipment, didn't include costing the time and probably did a shit sprayover. Oven?
ratchethatchet
I think maaco used to have a $500 respray but you had to do your own sanding. Apparently the paint didn't last too long but was good to 1/
Refresh older cars that weren't worth much money but didn't want to drive a rustbucket 2/2
$400 got primer, paint, thinner, hardener, and sprayer. Had the air compressor and barn. $800 got the vinyl and squeegees. Labor was me.
Danimalx23
The Oven is generally the most expensive part that most DIY'ers won't have access to...
Prometheus75
I addition, the way back to the old color e.g. for resell is a lot easier, too.
TwoVhsCopiesOfGoodfellas
Yes, also look into plastidipping, the colours have gotten crazy and it would only cost like 6-800 to wrap a car
rubbarz
A good wrap is around $1000 ish. A good respray is around $3000-$6000 and increases on type of car+color wanted.
fistermatic5000
In certain situations, it's better to wrap. Especially with very detailed paint jobs.
ohthatsgood
I have a 2009 Acura TSX... I was quoted $2,000 to have it wrapped. A decent paint job would be around the same price if not more.
ASquare
Honestly if you're getting a quality professional job it's not much more cheaper than a pain job. Advantage is you can always go back.
Yeah but it also looks really cheap. Try as you might it will have creases. Even if they manage to get it creaseless out of the shop it
will get them soon. If you want quality that will last just get it painted.
You don't get creases unless you are an idiot
Yes it will. And over time it gets worse.
superatheist
Cheaper than a proper respray for sure. The time involved in a respray is crazy

How much do you charge? I've been curious to the price of a respray.
Milchsteak
I work next to a paint shop and they take 2000-2500€ for a complete respray.
JeffreyBarter
Better buy a new car.
I guess that's not bad. Expensive but it's pretty much a new vehicle at that point if it's mechanically stable.
Are you talking respray to a different colour? Or just a touch up of existing? Big difference

Avg. graphic ad wrap is ~$2500 and full color change wrap is ~$3600. Chrome wraps start at $5-6k
Why do colour changes cost more? It's the same amount of vinyl, no? It's opaque so it's not like paint where it'd need extra labour & layers
[deleted]

Manual respray is very labor intensive so it's expensive in countries where people get paid well.

Can't you just re-wrap the one panel that was damaged?Seems like getting an extra sheet of vinyl would actually be easier than painting well
If you do wraps. Not everyone does. I just do paint. I can do a small blend in 45 minutes. I can't fix a wrap.
That's fair. I suppose body shops would be better versed in paint than wraps. Thanks for the reply :)

MancrushonThor
Clearly everyone here has a different opinion and no consensus has been reached
Good wraps will last as long or longer than a good paint job.
Most wraps will last several years if done with quality materials. I've done vehicles that are still holding up well 7-8 yrs later.
TracyKay
Bossman tells people 7-10 years depending on how well you care for it. That's been accurate so far from what I've heard.
123angelsandairwaves123
The stuff my company makes lasts 3 yrs if used with a UV protective overlaminate
I'm not a fan of wrapping but I heard a good point for it for classic cars. Wrap it in the color you want but maintain the original under

Yeah, that's cool. I don't know anything about comparative durability of either coating. But I don't imagine the vinyl comes off like paper.
The wraps don't just tear off actually they're pretty good at holding up against direct bumps it's just sharp edges it doesn't like really.
alwaysupvotecanadianhistory
It kinda looks like it'd be fun to peel off though.
Escheron
it's fun to peel, until peeling the wrap off full sized trucks outside in the blazing sun in 90degree weather is your job. (1)
but in the winter you get to use a flamethrower so that's totally badass (2)
Unverified
At least 5 years, not to mention that it protects the original paint
ijnss
If you wrap a car you should have a garage or something similar or it wont last very long in the sun.
first hand experience, it doesnt last long if you set the truck on fire
Obviously you bought cheap materials. /s

Im in florida. So idk if that intense heat will affect it
supraman2turbo
Most likely will that in the nonstop UV bombardment. Figure it is similar to window tint, florida beats it up
The colour of the wrap might just fade quicker with it being in the sun most of the time

3M vinyl is supposed to last 7-10 years. Don't know about the other brands.

Wraps peal off like stickers with zero residue. The subsequent owner wouldn't even know, so resale won't be impacted.

MrForgetfulable
Wrapped my e30 a few months back, it's easier than you think, but time consuming for sure. Several years if done right, wash by hand.
plymouthvaliant
Main benefit is that you change the color while preserving the original paint.
plymouthvaliant
Side benefit is that it requires less specialized equipment/facilities than paint to install. Supposed to last a few years.
plymouthvaliant
Never had any problems with touchless car washes with my wrap.

There are some pretty amazing colors. Even ones that look carbon fiber and wood.
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
Its the poor mans paint job, only thing worse is plasti dipping.
shitonyourmom
If you ever plan to change color again this is much better than paint and cheaper. Plus you keep your original paint.
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
The entire point of painting is to get rid of the original paint.
DanImguru
No this is actually a really good thing, it's wayy cheaper then just re painting the whole car and it protects the original paint.
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
Just because its cheaper doesn't make it better. It looks shitty, creases and peels & the point of painting is to get rid of the original.
Roctre
Only creases and peels if its a shit installer and it doesn't look shitty in the least bit. Plus it keeps the car paint looking brand new.
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
Once again. They entire point of doing this is to change the paint. Also any kind of scratch will start the peeling process, where as on

TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsTheBabyAteMyDingo
As someone who actually does this, not really hard at all.
wheredoitypemyusername
For me it was very difficult to do it without stretching the material past the point of resuming it's original form once no longer heated.
TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsTheBabyAteMyDingo
It does take a few times to learn the feel of the vinyl, but once you get it the job gets easy.

That is because wrapping is done with special foil. It is stretchable and heatable. So when you make a mistake you can undo it.

TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
Yeah wraps are very low quality and look bad. They only thing worse is plasti dip.
AGrammeIsBetterThanADamn
I can think of lots worse. Rattlecan. Full-coverage duct tape or bumper stickers. The "art car". Airbrushed graphics. Smear shit all over it
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
I would 100% have shit smeared on my car then ever even think about plasti dip or wrapping it. Also duct tape is above wraps on the chart.
thoushaltnotpass
I don't know why you would do that. The car was much nicer before they wrapped it in that thing
AGrammeIsBetterThanADamn
Well, that's just like, your opinion, man.
plymouthvaliant
Having done both, yeah. Paint looks better, lasts longer, and isn't that much different in price.

SaltyAsshole
You forgot to factor in the expenses incurred from the learning curve of people.
JonRedcorn862
You stated materials doe..
SaltyAsshole
These days, people get solid color wraps as well
plymouthvaliant
Apparently the paint didn't last too long but was good to 1/
ratchethatchet
Refresh older cars that weren't worth much money but didn't want to drive a rustbucket 2/2
plymouthvaliant
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
Yeah but it also looks really cheap. Try as you might it will have creases. Even if they manage to get it creaseless out of the shop it
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
will get them soon. If you want quality that will last just get it painted.
W92Baj
You don't get creases unless you are an idiot
TooLazyToDoSomethingElse
Yes it will. And over time it gets worse.

Cheaper than a proper respray for sure. The time involved in a respray is crazy

I work next to a paint shop and they take 2000-2500€ for a complete respray.

Better buy a new car.
xXPhasemanXx
I guess that's not bad. Expensive but it's pretty much a new vehicle at that point if it's mechanically stable.

The wraps don't just tear off actually they're pretty good at holding up against direct bumps it's just sharp edges it doesn't like really.

It kinda looks like it'd be fun to peel off though.

it's fun to peel, until peeling the wrap off full sized trucks outside in the blazing sun in 90degree weather is your job. (1)

but in the winter you get to use a flamethrower so that's totally badass (2)
