So this was brought to me
This belonged to a graduate student with a master's thesis in Engineering on it. We/I don't work on Mac's often, but the feels for someone who has that much work with no backups and this was all his work. This was left in an apartment fire and obviously has been burnt to a crisp.

When I opened it, water was dripping out. They don't know if it was on or not but it sure doesn't look good.
However, I took the hard drive and was able to read the files after a bit of work and was able to pull off his thesis off and save it to a flash drive.

Do not place it on things like blankets that will hold heat in and block airflow. Get a can of compressed air to blow dust out of the (1/3)

you have to re-encode them in right format&profile, I recommend Handbrake (free, gives multiple 'iTunes/iPod/iPhone' profiles).

If it's a laptop it's likely got either VGA or HDMI output ports, and you can hook up an external monitor.

keep in mind, some laptops require a fn+f key combo to switch from the primary to secondary display. be sure to try that

First thing you want to check is if one of the memory sticks went bad, take one out and try booting, then try the other. If that (1/2)

doesn't work you need to reflow the video card, reballing is better but more expensive. If that doesn't work the mother board is bad.(2/2)

I don't recommend doing the reflow yourself unless you're very confident with computer hardware, don't do a reball yourself at all.

Well, motherboards are replaceable, though for laptops getting the right type of motherboard may be difficult, especially for older laptop.
