Fully frozen snow, like on Antarctica, by contrast, is powdery, meaning you can't really do a whole lot with it...
Actually, yes! Well, kind of. Snow as we know it is partially melted, meaning we can compact it to make snowmen, snowballs, etc.

I remember reading a CN comic back in the day which actually covered this. If the comic's canon, Deedee tunnels her way in as a last resort.
it was also probably shatter glass, meaning if it breaks, it's designed to shatter into little pieces instead of large chunks
Most solids expand when heated, glass included. The ice cold water cause that spot to shrink again, cause it to shatter
