There's misidentifying something while you're under pressure from an active air attack, and misidentifying something that even if it was a F-14 coming your way doesn't pose much of a threat.
I think inventing fantasy "others" and minorities (aliens, mutants) for the fascists to hate on was the clever and right thing to do in this instance. You still get the idea across without marginalising actual existing groups.
