Would help if I used units. It's -10F difference for that extreme example. For 0C x 2 = 0 + 30 = 30F. -2F degrees off.
Generally you won't need the approximation in whether that cold. If you use the ACTUAL formula and not the approximation you get -40.
You've lost a negative there. -40(1.8)= -72 + 30 = -42. Only 2 degrees off. Pretty close approximation.
Check your math. You lost a negative. -40 x 2= -80, -80 + 30 = -50. Decently close approximation
It's not! The version they suggest (multiply by 2 and add 30) is just to give you an approximation to get you in the same ballpark.
