I'm not sure what you mean, exactly. The YF-22 is literally the prototype F-22. The final model was altered of course, that's always how it is with prototypes.

It's the prototype of the F-22 Raptor fighter jet. There were two of them, and this ring is forged from a titanium alloy component of the second and best prototype. The Y- in front of the number designates a prototype, i.e., the YA-10 was the proto A-10 Warthog.

They have a ring-cutter nowadays that can cut it, called the Dolphin Ring Cutter.

A small strip from a part of the Blackbird's airframe is formed into a circle and welded, using another strip as filler metal. Then the circle is carved and shaped into the ring of a specific size. There are many careful operations to make it happen, as titanium is a difficult and reactive metal so there's no room for error.

There are a lot of stories like that, but the real deal is that the CIA acquired rutile ore from the Soviets through several shell companies. The ore was then smelted into titanium alloys in the US, and used to make the Blackbirds.

I'm not sure it's a titanium thing, exactly. I noticed all metal picks are usually just laser-cut from a sheet of metal, and then maybe tumbled. So they have a hard, square-edged circumference. These NASA picks get polished all the way around and are also very thin and can slightly flex, compared to typical metal picks. So they're a bit unusual that way. :)

A lot of guitarists have used these and love them. They're very well-polished and slick around the circumference which helps a lot.

The certain titanium alloys I use, which are heat treated specifically for blade use, are quite good. Especially for something that cuts or chops like a machete. Less so for repetitive cutting of abrasive things.

They chop and cut nicely because they're so thin, like a huge razor blade. They wont split a log easily though, but you can baton them through no problem.
