Queen cannot move to g2, also cannot initially move to f2 since the knight is blocking it. The check gets the knight out of the queen's path, allowing queen to f2 for checkmate. This is still a mate even if the king moves to f1 to escape the initial check.
For example, moving the knight to b3 instead lets the opponent castle king side and get away or put their queen on e2, etc. So the check forces them to "waste" a move and you can get the checkmate on your next move.
One thing I have not seen mentioned: it is important that the move you make to get the knight out of your queen's way is this move. By checking the king you force the opponent to choose from a small set of legal responses, none of which stop checkmate from queen to f2.
