At least from a former Christian view, the most violent being in the Bible was God. I can't say anything about other religions texts, but my guess would be they are similar. I bet there are many stories that muddy that interpretation.
Bad people play a roll, but monotheistic religions teach that their God is infallible. No matter the values imposed, religion has taught their followers that of they do as a God says they are correct. A bit of arrogance is promoted with this thought. Bad people can manipulate it, but anyone can take it in a way where they can dehumanize people who have different views.
They are a minority here. They will get fucked up. Christians do stuff like this in the US.
