Does this mean if you hold a grenade upside down and pull the pin out, it wont explode? Someone try and get back to me.

The pin that drops is spring loaded so will act against gravity

I hate it when things act against gravity! So evil! :p

There's a spring. It's even in the animation.

The firing pin is spring loaded. Pay attention.
Assholedriver
The hand gun is wrong, the gases push and move the ejection mechanisms as the bullet is being pushed out of the barrel.
Olifant
No. Glocks are recoil operated; what you describe is blowback. The stroke of recoil op guns happen mostly after the bullet exits the muzzle.
Assholedriver
"recoil powered"? http://youtu.be/7Fr5ccyriJI?t=2m37s Gas pressure initiates the mechanism directly, not recoil of your hand.
Olifant
I do not think you know what that terminology means.
FaLaLaLaLaGrumpy
Thank you, that gif left me a little confused
Assholedriver
"recoil powered"? http://youtu.be/7Fr5ccyriJI?t=2m37s Gas pressure initiates the mechanism directly, not recoil of your hand.
JacobTheUnicorn
While you are correct, it doesnt happen until after the bullet leaves the breach. Its operated by recoil more than gas.
Assholedriver
"recoil powered"? http://youtu.be/7Fr5ccyriJI?t=2m37s Gas pressure initiates the mechanism directly, not recoil of your hand.
JacobTheUnicorn
Still, the bullet leaves the muzzle before the slide even starts moving, which was my main point. And I never said "The recoil of your hand"

It's not crushed; it's basically rammed further into the barrel by the propellant charges if I'm not mistaken

It gets pushed into the barrel and then the propellant is loaded in behind it, the cutaway just stops early.

Cool, but the heart one is wrong, and I cannot make sense of the auto transmission.
dwkindig
But can you make a gif which explains why my car sounds different driving in reverse gear?
bibliophile
I can't, but it's because gears are cut at an angle, and they will "whine" when driven (or spun) in 1 of 2 directions, so they made it whine
yourbassist
Because you bought a Honda.
bibliophile
when it spins in reverse gear, that way it won't make that noise 99% of the time when people are driving forward.
chansuke
This is not a correct explanation.
dwkindig
Thanks! I never knew. :)
chansuke
(4)gears for forward and reverse, where the need for strength outweighs the need for quiet.
chansuke
(1)That explanation is wrong. Helical gears are quiet when spun either way. Reverse gears are straight cut, and thus noisy.
chansuke
(3)If you want to know what it sounds like when ALL the gears are straight cut, listen to a race car. They typically use straight cut
chansuke
(2)This isnt as true as it used to be though, some newer cars coming with helical cut reverse gears with synchros on them.

BishlamekGurpgork
There are many methods. I have one that has a plastic ring that spins under the coins, with holes that catch coins that lie flat. Being at
BishlamekGurpgork
an angle, it lifts coins out of the pile as it spins, and passes them over holes sized for smallest coins first. Larger coins pass over.
cyrillic
You may also be shocked to learn that non round coins, eg 50p or 20p, are the same diameter width where ever you measure?
paigezero
It bothers me that it seems to rely just on weight/momentum, that doesn't seem like it would be as reliable as it obviously is.
bahamutlives
I've watched the gif a dozen times and have come to the following conclusion: it IS witchcraft
EllieJ
I stared at that gif for longer than I've ever stared at anything on Imgur...ever. I'M NOT ASHAMED
Akdj
I've fixed a lot of single-coin mechanisms (like for arcade machines) but I didn't know how the mulit ones worked. Pretty awesome.
TJmuthafuckinDetweilers
we had to build machines like this in 6th grade but with different balls instead of coins. No instructions, pass/fail if it worked or not
Yeahmynameisshe
Every time I have to make something that 'works' in school. I nearly always make it non functional somehow someway, even if it's that easy.
MrAsianGuy90
Or a small midget?
Sklumlord
All of these were awesome, but I am definitely saving the coin one for my gif folder.. that shit is too insanely cool.
WhoNeedsToiletPaperAnywayEh
It still looks like witchcraft to me. But I'm extremely tired right now. So, good night (from Europe).
rmiller9990
I'm actually trying to figure out how I THOUGHT these things worked before..
kendovzii
I worked for a bank, and got to be the one that cleans and troubleshoots them. One had a sensor and didn't bother to sort. The other 1/2
kendovzii
2/2 also had a sensor but had 4 drawers, and would flick a metal piece to drop the coin in the correct drawer as the coins rolled down a bar
kendovzii
So yes, witchcraft.
BigFatDan
This is a very rudimentary sorter. Most use centrifugal force. I used to work at a bank and have worked on several sorters.
HappinessIsaColdPint
Not only that, on the left it apparently has a secret trap that steals some of your coins... DAMN YOU COINSTAR!!!!!!!!!!!
scubaru08
coin star charges something like 10% for the use of the machine. it's in the fine print.
sukiyaki
Those are pennies from a different country. I've used one of these before to sort money at a charity event.
BishlamekGurpgork
I think that is for stacked coins. Stacked coins will mis-sort in this design.
HappinessIsaColdPint
I want to eat your username.
kiivipallo
I still don't quite understand how that works.
InterestingFacts
It's sorted by size. Only dimes fit in the smallest chute, so they're sorted out first. Then the next size chute is pennies, and since (1/2)
baldorr
ditto
BishlamekGurpgork
The chute narrows. When quarters cannot fit through a bend, they rise out on bevelled edges as they swing through a curve.
MissDerz
Right at the turn with that silver ball... Notice the slot that only catches the larger sized quarter.. Then smaller paths for the others
BishlamekGurpgork
I think they were worried about HOW it catches the quarter. I had to think about it too, before realizing that the edge must be bevelled.
MissDerz
The how is the notch right next to the silver ball. It only catches the larger size quarter
BishlamekGurpgork
The chute narrows. When quarters cannot fit through a bend, they rise out on bevelled edges as they swing through a curve.
kiivipallo
YES! Finally an explanation I understood! Had to look real hard at the first sorting. Are they the quarters? I have no grip on US currency.
BishlamekGurpgork
They would go by size. So quarters, nickels, pennies, dimes. These days, the dollar coins (relatively rare) would go first.
kamisan
I get it but I can totally get behind these things coming with a more in-depth explination
raminagrobis
I think recent ones work with magnetism. All coins have different weight / metal quantity so reply differently to the same magnet.
raminagrobis
(the magnet only provides the job of gravity here.. the dividing paths are the same)
BishlamekGurpgork
Many coins are made of non-ferrous metals. (Meaning no magneting.)
BishlamekGurpgork
(2) On the other hand, a magnetic field can be disrupted by non-ferrous things, so a computer-controlled machine might still use them.
raminagrobis
interesting. I have no actual knowledge of the commonly used machines, but I'm still pretty sure it works with magnets instead of gravity
raminagrobis
(3) they often have an explicit spot for you to rub your coin, according its static electricity with the device, in case of rejection..
raminagrobis
(2) that's why, when a soda machine (for example) rejects your coin, you rub it against the machine, to charge it correctly
InterestingFacts
The dimes have all been sorted out, only pennies go through, etc etc etc up to the largest size. (2/2)
TheNamesTalcJamesTalcSpecialAntiCakedayAgent
That's actually the opposite of what happens above.
TheEmperorOfSanFrancisco
Then explain the first section
InterestingFacts
I believe that is to get all the coins to spread out so that they're 1 layer thick.
ishtadaal
Magnets?
TheNamesTalcJamesTalcSpecialAntiCakedayAgent
Then explain magnets
skellious
innertia. the heavier coins get flung out (like a spacecraft escaping earth)
DistractingGif
Each slot is made so only a certain sized coin can fit through.
TacoMcNacho
That doesn't explain how it gives you the exact change you need, though.
PickingUsernamesIsHard
You're thinking of a different machine, I think. The one in the gif is for counting coins, not dispensing them.
TacoMcNacho
Oh I figured it was the mechanism inside vending machines
DistractingGif
Magic,
TheEmperorOfSanFrancisco
That machine is automatically released. the one we are talking about is the first gif.
TacoMcNacho
The grenade one? No we weren't. We were talking about the coin sorter.
paigezero
It's not just size, look at how the biggest silver ones separate, it's a lot to do with weight and the momentum they have while falling.
MissDerz
Nope.. There's a notch at the turn that only catches the quarter. Then the others have individual sized paths
TobleroneDoesntStrikeBack
Yep, I don't get it either. The only possible explanation is still:
BishlamekGurpgork
The chute narrows. When quarters cannot fit through a bend, they rise out on bevelled edges as they swing through a curve.
itsamazing
ahhh. finally. that DOES make sense.
Artefact
