If I had to guess, because they were responding to a call regarding a (potentially) lethal weapon. They met perceived force with force.
And risk missing and hitting God knows what behind the target? If you want nom-lethal then it needs to be with a non lethal weapon.
It's getting blown up because it's days before the Ferguson grand jury comes to a decision on that cop. People are getting real stupid.

How do they determine a species is new? DNA different by a certain amount?
