The fact that the act of sex is using reproductive organs in an act to reproduce is not an accident. You knew what you were doing.

What is your point? You've already conceded it could be without intention. "Accident" can mean without intention. Case closed.

TechnicolorSlippers
The act of sex is not always an act of reproduction. It can be recreational for orgasm purposes only where offspring are not intended. 1/2
IdontshaveforSherlock
Doesn't matter, you're still using reproductive organs in a manner that result in reproduction.

for your logic to work, it has to be true that you get pregnant EVERY time you have sex which is false

I think the point of that is to find the farthest country behind Russia. And while Finland's border indeed is longer, Norway is farther away

Both Norway and Finland share a border with Russia. The map given does not show it very well, but if you look at Google Maps it's clear.

beewhy
There are more decimal numbers between 0 and 1 (like 0.1, 0.000132, etc.) than there are whole numbers (1,2,-8, etc.)
ObscureStarWarsReference
I don't really math, but couldn't both be infinite?
beewhy
They are both infinite. But there's different flavours of infinity! I left a comment trail "explaining" it.
dangerkitty
They are both infinite. One is just more infinitely large than the other.
JDTHOMPSON21
They're both infinite. The integers are considered a subgroup of the real numbers though. So technically yes and no.
kubit
It goes beyond that. There aren't enough integers to pair one to every real number, whereas you can pair every rational to an integer.
soulsource
Yeah, but given an infinite amount of time, you could count all integer numbers, and, as beewhy explained in another comment, they can (1/?)
soulsource
be mapped to all fractional numbers, so that for every integer, you'll get exactly one fractional number. (2/?)
soulsource
But there are numbers that can't be written as a fraction - irrational numbers like Pi, Euler's constant, the square root of 2,... (3/?)
soulsource
As it seems that there is no way to map those irrational numbers to integer numbers, there are "more" possible numbers between 0 and 1,(4/?)
StussyFiend
i dont think that is true...please explain.
beewhy
Check my comment trail!
StussyFiend
very interesting yet something I will never understand. +1
dangerkitty
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elvOZm0d4H0 Not sure if this has this particular proof.
StussyFiend
I was just thinking that their are infinity numbers between each number and there really isn't such thing as an infinity bigger than another
dangerkitty
Physically, yes, impossible. Conceptually and mathmatically, it is entirely possible.
StussyFiend
huh. how interesting. I would kill to have a cool documentary about that.
kubit
It's not 'impossible'. Just hasn't been observed so far. Observing infinities is a bit challenging anyway.
dangerkitty
That said, don't worry about it too much. As far as physicists are concerned, it isn't a meaningful thing.
beewhy
depends on your flavour of physics. I'm a Mathematician, but I've consulted for Physics colleagues who do research in Quantum field theory
beewhy
For those asking, the idea of the proof is if you have two sets of things, one way to check they're the same size is to pair them off (1/?)
beewhy
(Aside: Imagine pairing guys and girls as dancing partners, if afterwards theres 3 guys without partners then there were more guys thangirls
beewhy
And if you can pair them all off without any left over in either set than you know they're the same size. When you do this with the (2/?)
beewhy
decimal numbers in between 0 and 1 and the whole numbers, you end up with a bunch of decimal numbers left over. So the decimal numbers (3/?)
ObscureStarWarsReference
This is why I said I don't math. How can you "run out" of whole numbers? EXPLAIN THIS IN 140 CHARACTERS!

are bigger. This was a really revolutionary proof, Cantor, it's creator, is quoted as saying "I see it, but I don't believe it!". (4/5)

That's roughly 7 orders of magnitude larger than the number of Planck times since the Big Bang. (8 x 10^60)

Say you were picking cards at random to make a deck. Every card is unique, so there are 52 possible choices for the 1st card. 1/2

The only cells that are not replaced over time are the brain cells, as far as I know. But true, some parts of the body never gets replaced 1
turtlefarm
Like, about 50% of your heart since heart cells are replaced in a very slow rate. Telomeres are not replaced in specialised cells, however 2
turtlefarm
stem cells are able to correct missing telomeres practically indefinely. Stem cells exist for the purpose of replacing dying cells.

The atoms are swapped out, just not the cells. The cells swap out atoms all the time.
87casc
1)Some molecules molecules in cells are not swapped out, like telomeres. You're born with telomeres of a certain length... every time a
87casc
5)the point is, you're born with telomeres of a certain length, and they're never replaced...if the cell could replace them & their atoms...
87casc
3)while the ends of telomeres can be replenished to some degree, they are always shortening, and some effects of old age are due to
87casc
4)telomeres being exhausted and genetic damage occurring from further cell division.
87casc
6)telomeres wouldn't be exhausted in old cells and genetic damage of this kind wouldn't occur.
87casc
2)cell divides, the telomeres on the end of your chromosomes shorten, this prevents your chromosomes from being damaged during division...
PlanetPiss
I read this first as referring to conservation of matter. As in all our atoms have previously existed as something else. But I re-read it.
CaptainPicArt
And brain cells?
87casc
2)you don't create new muscle cells.... the cells you have just get bigger.
87casc
1) maybe? but I don't think brain cells are that different from muscle cells, for example. Contrary to popular thought, when you lift/workout
mrgreeneyes
But it said "atoms" not cells or telomeres. Seems like it is still true.
87casc
telomeres are molecules made up of atoms. because of how our cellular biology works, they are never totally replaced.
mrgreeneyes
What are never totally replaced, the molecules or the atoms?
87casc
telomeres are a nucleotide sequence, which is just a specific type of cellular molecule (made up of atoms). Contrary to what ppl may think
87casc
3)living organisms have mechanisms to prevent that from happening, because unorganized chemical reactions waste energy & generally do damage
87casc
2)In a living cell, atoms are not randomly swapping in and out of molecules; that would generally require a chemical reaction & energy
NationalistCanadianMooseWarrior
Molecules are made of atoms.
87casc
4)point is, the post is wrong. It said all atoms in your body have been replaced multiple times... but this is not true for atoms...

Yeah, I ended up looking it up rather than wait for a reply. Your replies are better than the answers I found, though. Thanks for explaining

In the post's defense a bit, most cells, (with the exception of a few, very specific types) are themselves replaced.

essentially its the cap on the end of your DNA strands; the older you get the weaker they get and like the immune system; break down
CrescendoMyInduendo
Is it somehow connected to apoptosis?
Murloh
Yay biology. And then you get fun cancer mutations

1) There are studies that show exercise aids in the repair or maintenance of telomeres, but this effect has limits, I think.
BhawbTheMagnificent
The problem is telomere shortening is a good thing overall, so even if we could counteract it we'd just end up with super cancer.
87casc
True.
sweetnaivety
my grandpa is super active and works out, he's 90 years old and stronger than me, can do jumping jacks, pushups, pullups, etc.!
87casc
Sounds like a real Jack LaLanne
sweetnaivety
who?
DatDarthCaedus
There are newer studies that show that drinking a beer now and then helps with the telomeres as well :D also coffee, iirc
87casc
1) I don't doubt it. It's been a few years since I was college. Reading the wiki page, it seems most telomere damage is due to oxidation...
87casc
3) not that they necessarily cause replenishment or addition of new telomere sequences on the ends of the telomeres. maybe?
87casc
2) not the side-effect of replication. So, interestingly, perhaps why exercise/beer/coffee reduces damage, they reduce oxidative damage...
butteredtoast789
right now they are considering cloning RNA early in life for later transplant
Malkiot
So you need to start when young? Well, fuck that.
butteredtoast789
People were always going to miss the boat; its not about us but the future. we're the old people now
HillaryClintonsEyes
If you're telomeres could repair themselves forever you'd have cancer. FYI stem cells can also repair their telomeres forever.
donkeymoney
It's just one aspect of us that wears down over time. I imagine we'd lose our minds first.

2) exercise slows aging, but it's not the fountain of youth.
wererat2000
Solution: Never stop exercising... ever.
ButterfingersCantPlayMiniTapDance
AlkeneThiol
This is false. Source: I did aging research for 8 years, including work on human telomerase.
BurdockBloodBitters
Actually, it's true and you're wrong. Source: I like to contradict people.
AlkeneThiol
Sounds like a sexy fetish
CrescendoMyInduendo
Care to elaborate?
AlkeneThiol
Considering the amount of people talking about telomeres lately, I am considering making a post reviewing current aging biology research.
CrescendoMyInduendo
Oh please do! That would be very interesting
DoctorWatchamacallit
this is debatable. It remains a possibility, but we honestly aren't sure yet
AlkeneThiol
The consensus in the aging field is that telomeres are but one variable in eukaryotic aging and likely far from the most important.
DoctorWatchamacallit
but to what extent they play a role in conjunction with the others is still unknown, and that's what i was hinting at
AlkeneThiol
Sure. But pretty much everything in cutting edge science can be said to be unknown. The data strongly suggest their unimportance, however
AlkeneThiol
Telomeres are very important for single cell "aging", at least in the context of genomic stability. For higher eukaryotes, not so much
RunningWolf

Science!
xylote
It's not so much about the cells replacing though. Cells have metabolisms too and go through constant change so their atoms staying where
xylote
they are is unlikely.
slamesh
No, the individual DNA molecules don't exhibit atomic turnover in these senescent cells. There is no known machinery for that to occur.
Valondra
Ahem. BOOM!
RunningWolf
You get a green arrow that points up!
AsABiologistWhoIsNotFunAtParties
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure telomeres are replaced, it's just that the replication fidelity is relatively poor so they degrade like a jpg
87casc
2)it just adds new nucleotides that are complementary to the old sequence, so still "old" atoms in your cells, so the post is still wrong.
AsABiologistWhoIsNotFunAtParties
I am with you that the image's claim about atoms is probably wrong, I just think your claim about telomeres is as well.
zex333
No, your kinda wrong. Its most likely that those old strands will have been removed or degraded over time when the cells die off.
87casc
That's what I said, but again, the chances of *all* "old" telomeres disappearing (with cells that die) is basically zero...
87casc
3)telomeres goes down, but they are still there. The only way they won't be there is if *all* cells that have "old" telomeres, die
87casc
2)because each time they replicate/cell divides, you've got a new young cell. Each time a cell divides, the proportion of "old" to "young"
87casc
4) incredibly unlikely.
87casc
1)Yeah, but when they are copied, the template is the old nucleotide sequence, and the replication process doesn't replace the old atoms

It appears the border is only by sea, not land. Even then, the wording is stupid, and the map doesn't help it's legitimacy either.
mcretso
There's a 196km land border between Norway and Russia.
PMMECORGISPLS
Wikipedia has no source for that measurement. It has no source for the other measurement either.
RatalieArcadia
Technically that one is true, but it's very pedestrian. North Korea and the U.S. are separated by "one ocean." It's really not that exciting
iGeography
Hahahahahha, no. Russia borders both Norway and North Korea. Can you please tell me how they are not seperated by one country?

ChilledOutEntertainer
I don't think it doesn't count as seeing yourself, just because of the route the light took.
alonebutihaveadog
Seriously. It's not like light just goes through air uninterrupted. Transmission through air and reflection are essentially the same.
ChilledOutEntertainer
Maybe a bit different. The photon is absorbed and another emitted for one thing. But still, it counts.
alonebutihaveadog
That's what I'm saying. Absorption and re-emission happens in the air, it's just the net direction is unchanged.

"You will never actually see yourself" Take a picture of you in the mirror, then click the flip button.
HordeKnight
I thought you guys were smarter than this. If you take a picture of mirror, its reversed. so you flip it and its not reversed anymore.
thepaperbag000
I am looking at my hands and body right now.
DoWGray
Two mirrors at a 90 degree angle will return an unflipped reflection of you.
FeralChicken
It means you won't ever actually see yourself like you would another person
DoctorWatchamacallit
reflection is literally changing the direction of light. The distinction is meaningless from a physical standpoint
forresthopkinsa
But you still don't look the same as other people see you...
DoctorWatchamacallit
yeah you dp.
kirokatashi
Ce n'est pas toi.
mritty
you'd be seeing a picture of your reflection, not "you" yourself. It said you're seeing a reflection *or a depiction" of yourself.
HordeKnight
No, you would not be seeing a picture of your reflection, you'd be seeing yourself.
HordeKnight
Okay, so it seems like you can't read. I would NOT be seeing a reflection of myself, since the image was FLIPPED AGAIN. Fucking idiots
mritty
No, you'd be seeing a PICTURE of your reflection, which had been rotated. It's still just a picture, not your actual physical face.
mritty
It's no different than the difference between your physical couch, and a picture of your couch.
mritty
You seem to be thinking the issue is we never see ourselves the way others see us. That's not it. It's that you never see your actual face.
DoctorWatchamacallit
by that logic, literally everything you look at is a "picture" of something and not the object itself. This concept is meaningless
mritty
No. If I'm looking at my couch, I'm looking *at* my couch. If I flip a photo of my couch's reflection, that's a picture, not my couch.
DoctorWatchamacallit
what are you even defining as "a photo"
DoctorWatchamacallit
what does this even mean? What are you saying?
vvilko
They haven't reached absolute zero, it's a theoretical number. They only know it exists because temperature is laminar.
Sprixxen
Which one? I see in the comments no one can pick one that's actually flat out untrue. Maybe the atom one but even that's debatable it seems.
alonebutihaveadog
and the reflection thing is iffy. Double reflections aren't flipped, and there's no difference between that and seeing another person. (2/2)
alonebutihaveadog
There are no oil oceans, the atom thing, the brain isn't the most complex (universe), the lowest temperature wasn't at LHC, the heart thing
DefinitelyNotEmmaWatson
The last one is also wrong. The children would have very similiar DNA, but they wouldn't be siblings in any sense of the word.
alonebutihaveadog
Well, if the two sets of twins are identical, then their children would be genetically indistinguishable from siblings (by today's tests)
DefinitelyNotEmmaWatson
That depends on how you define "siblings". Sure, they'd have the same DNA, but that doesn't make them siblings in my book.

spicebar
Genetically, identical twins are the same person. When identical twin sisters (for example) each have kids with a different man, it's (1/2)

genetically exactly the same as if one woman had kids with 2 different men. The genes from the moms are drawn from identical pools. (2/2)
